Retention Issues
For the most part, we found technology is not a problem for students. But the clunkiness of campus-wide course shells may deter instructors. So...do we have a problem with
instructor
retention?
How does pedagogy differ in f2f, 50/50, and 100% online courses? How does online teaching differ between disciplines? What can we learn from successful online communities like Facebook? Can we generate a "best online practices" list?
Are steep student drop offs at beginning of semester due to faulty expectations? Could this be alleviated in the wording of course offering? Are we having problems retaining students after this period? Can we quickly identify students (or have them identify themselves) early on who are not ready to take an online course?
Online Course Offerings
More students are ready to succeed (in terms of basic online skills) in higher division courses. Should schools offer mostly higher division online classes?
Which courses would be appropriate for 100% online vs. hybrid format?
What steps would need to be taken to provide more online offerings for these courses?
What does a successful online classroom look like?
How to create meaningful group work online?
How to best provide lecture/lesson delivery online?
How to exploit the web for innovative evaluations (interactive & self-reflective testing/quizzes?)
How to best (and most efficiently) provide feedback students online?
Course Evaluations
No one is responsible for reviewing & approving instructor's website design.
Should criteria (reading requirements, writing quantity) be the same for f2f course? Should online classes feature more informal writing than a f2f course?
How do we balance departmental course consistency with teachers' academic freedom?
Online Instructor Support
What should an ongoing online committee do?
Should there be a meeting for online instructors at semester start (as we do with department/divisions)?
Can we find mentors for new online instructors?
Can we create an Online Instructor Packet (additional materials not included with technical training): intro to online pedagogy; sample course shells; sample assignments (web quests, discussions, modules, etc); best practices; tips and tricks?
